That pitch is not entirely false. DeFi protocols have genuinely distributed billions of dollars in yield to participants who understood what they were doing and accepted the risks involved. But the gap between the advertised experience and the actual one is wide enough to have swallowed entire life savings, and the protocols responsible for those losses rarely appear in the promotional content that drew investors in.

The scale of these events is not trivial. Transparency of team and treasury provides a meaningful signal about long-term incentive alignment. Anonymous teams are not automatically disqualifying — some of DeFi's most durable protocols were built by pseudonymous developers — but the absence of any identifiable accountability structure raises the cost of due diligence considerably.
Liquidity depth and exit conditions deserve attention before entry, not after. Thin liquidity pools can make it difficult or expensive to exit positions during periods of market stress, precisely when you are most likely to want to.
